Leagues Announcing Their Return
However, several leagues have finished their matches in advance. France’s Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 already named their champion – Paris St-Germain, as they had the highest number of points. The Eredivisie major football league in the Netherlands canceled the rest of its season and has not declared any title-holder.
Serie A football teams have started training sessions on May 18th and are scheduled to resume the season on June 13, albeit with empty stadiums.
England’s Premier League clubs have also stated that they want to make a return, planning on coming back on June 8 to finish the season by July 27, reported The Times. The league executives have been in talks with the British government with other sports associations to let the teams play the rest of the 92 games in the Premier League. A majority of the league’s 20 teams have played so far 29 of the 38 games.
La Liga has confirmed that they will be resuming matches in June, with the teams having already started on May 4th. The Spanish league has stated that they hope to start matches on June 6th or by June 28th at the latest, in order to be ready for the European competition in August. The clubs are expected to play the rest of the eleven matches without spectators. ESPN has announced that the league should expect to play with closed stadiums until January 2021.
